Mr. Maginnis

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what was the total cost of compensation paid to pedestrians in (a) 1982–83 and (b) number of National Health Service pay beds in Northern Ireland, the total number of paying patients occupying those beds, the beds' average occupancy rate and the income raised by the use of the beds expressed first in gross terms, secondly after allowing for movement in the retail price index, and thirdly after allowing for movement in National Health Service pay and prices.

Details of the availability and uptake of accommodation by hospital private patients in Northern Ireland between 1973 and 1982 and the income received are set out below. Information for the period prior to 1973 is not held centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

1983–84 as a result of claims made against the DOE roads service, Omagh division, for injuries sustained due to defective roads and footpaths; and what proportion of this was made through out of court settlements;

(2) what was the total cost of compensation paid to motorists in (a) 1982–83 and (b) 1983–84 as a result of claims made against the DOE roads service, Omagh division, for damage to vehicles, and injuries sustained due to defective roads; and what proportion of this was made through out of court settlements.
