HC Deb 12 April 1984 vol 58 c333W
Q94. Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Prime Minister if she will renew instructions currently being ignored, notably in the European Community, that those who speak and act for Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at home and abroad should not officially use the term "Ireland" to denote the Irish Republic.

The Prime Minister

Under United Kingdom law it is correct to describe the Republic of Ireland as such, and Government Departments and overseas missions are reminded from time to time that this term should normally be used.
