Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average size of classes (a) in maintained schools and (b) in fee-paying schools covered by the assisted places scheme.

Mr. Dunn

The overall average size of class for maintained primary, middle and secondary schools in England was 23.0 in January 1983. Corresponding information is not available on the schools participating in the assisted places scheme.

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children in England are currently in classes of 30, 35 and 40 pupils, respectively, under primary and secondary headings.
