HC Deb 11 April 1984 vol 58 c215W
Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what provision has been made in the plans for the new Woolwich prison for a visitors' centre; and whether suitable provision has been made for toilet, refreshment and childcare amenities for visitors.

Mr. Hurd

Provision has been made in the preliminary designs for Woolwich for toilet, refreshment, waiting and childcare facilities in the visiting complex within the prison. It is not the practice for the prison department to provide an external visitors' centre at new prisons designed with adequate visiting facilities, although the department is prepared, on request, to consider making available a small area of land within the overall prison site for development by local statutory or voluntary agencies for this purpose where a need is thought to exist.
