HC Deb 11 April 1984 vol 58 cc227-8W
Mr. Hill

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the known number of animals per year over the last five years which have died from rabies while in quarantine in the United Kingdom; and what efforts are being made to publicise the risks in ports from possible outbreaks of rabies within the area of the port.

Mrs. Fenner

one animal has died—in 1983—from rabies in quarantine in the United Kingdom during the last five years. The Ministry and port authorities co-operate to ensure that the danger of rabies is fully publicised and that every precaution is taken to prevent its introduction into this country. In addition, yesterday I launched a major publicity campaign to warn of the risk of introducing the disease into the United Kingdom.
