HC Deb 11 April 1984 vol 58 c288W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the standard rate of pay for mentally handicapped people engaged in commercial or industrial work in adult training centres and in residential hospitals.

Mr. John Patten

There is no standard rate of payment to mentally handicapped people engaged in work of a commercial or industrial nature in adult training centres or hospitals. Payments are entirely at the discretion of the local authority or health authority concerned and are not related solely to the work done, but are also intended to assist with the training and rehabilitation of the mentally handicapped people involved.

Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will extend the grants from the family fund to mentally handicapped people over the age of 16 years.

Mr. John Patten

There are no plans to extend the present criteria.
