Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the number of urgent and non-urgent patients on hospital waiting lists in each health district on 30 September 1983; how many urgent cases had been on each list for more than a month; and how many non-urgent cases had been on each list for more than a year;

(2) why hospital waiting lists by district for 30 September are still not available.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of persons on National Health Service waiting lists at the latest available date.

Mr. John Patten

[pursuant to his replies, 15 March 1984, c. 272, and 2 April 1984, c. 412]: The requested information is given in the table. The majority of district health authorities reported a reduction in the size of the inpatient waiting list between 30 March and 30 September 1983. The final total for England is 703,755. This figure replaces the estimate of 704,500 given by my right hon. Friend in his reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Staffordshire, Moorlands (Mr. Knox) on 8 March, at column 683. It confirms the improvement in the waiting list total, which fell by more than 22,000 between March and September 1983.
