HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c184W
Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report(a) the number of filled and unfilled mode A youth training scheme places in Cumbria, (b) the number of filled and unfilled mode B1 places in Cumbria, and (c) the costs of unfilled places in (a) and (b) above; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The number of approved places and number of young people in training under the youth training scheme in Cumbria at the end of February is given in the following table:

Number
Mode A
Approved places 3,277
Number in training 2,445
Mode B1
Approved places 542
Number in training 356

The cost of unfilled places in Cumbria is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. however, the following information applies generally:

  1. (a) A payment of £100 is made to managing agents for each contracted mode A place whether or not the place is filled. In addition, compensation may be paid to managing agents for the inescapable costs of vacated places.
  2. (b) The costs of mode B1 schemes (other than the trainee allowance) are paid according to the number of approved places on the schemes, whether or not they are filled. the average cost of an unfilled mode B1 place is about £2,000 a year.

Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the present number of (a) men and (b) women on youth training schemes in the Greater London council area.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It is estimated that, at the end of February, there were about 9,500 males and 6,800 females in training on the youth training scheme in Greater London.
