HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c163W
Mr. Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has calculated the likely effect on the numbers of English students attending Scottish universities of his Department's proposals to change travel grants for students in receipt of local education authority grants; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Keith Joseph

I am aware of the concerns that have been expressed about the possible effect of the new arrangements on the number of English students attending Scottish universities, but this is only one of the factors affecting students' choices and it is not possible to calculate its likely effect.

Mr. Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what particular provision he plans to make for reimbursing the travelling expenses of medical students who have regular travelling between hospitals during term time.

Sir Keith Joseph

Under the new arrangements for the treatment of students travel expenditure which I announced on 4 April, travel expenditure incurred by medical, dental or nursing students in respect of nonresidential attendance away from the main place of study will continue to be dealt with on a reimbursement basis.
