HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c187W
Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the level of unemployment in Stockton in 1979; what is the present level of unemployment; and what percentage change this represents.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the number registered as unemployed in March 1979 and the number of unemployed claimants in March 1984 in the Stockton and Thornaby jobcentre area. It also gives the numbers for October 1982 on both bases and the percentage changes between comparable figures. The figures include school leavers and are not seasonally adjusted. The comparison between October 1982 and March 1984 is affected by the provisions announced in the 1983 Budget which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on in order to receive supplementary benefit or national insurance credits. The effect nationally was about half of one per cent.; estimates of the effect at local level are not available.

Registered unemployed
March 1979 5,523
October 1982 11,184
Percentage increase 102.5
Unemployed claimants
October 1982 9,750
March 1984 10,506
Percentage increase 7.8

Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of school leavers in Stockton joined a youth training scheme in 1983–84; what is the total number of youth training scheme places in Stockton in 1984; and what percentage of these places remain unfilled.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The careers service estimates that some 1,775 16 and 17-year-olds left school in the Stockton and Billingham area in 1983. By the end of February 1984, 1,386 young people had entered the youth training scheme in the same area and at that date there were 1,656 approved places of which 576 were unfilled.

Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the percentage of young people in the Stockton travel-to-work area who have completed a youth training scheme and have not obtained full-time employment.
