HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 cc174-5W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will give an estimate of the total value to the United Kingdom dairy industry of the lost production which comes as a result of the milk production quotas agreed at the Council of Agriculture Ministers in Brussels.

Mr. MacGregor

[pursuant to his reply, 5 April 1984, c. 679]: While producers can be expected to cut back milk deliveries as a result of the supplementary levy arrangements introduced on 2 April, in many cases they will be able to cut production costs at the same time and to expand other parts of their enterprises to offset reduced returns from milk. In addition, some producers may be able to cut back milk deliveries by increasing the utilisation of milk on the farm. It is not possible to provide a meaningful estimate of the total consequences of these changes in the milk industry.
