HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 cc195-6W
Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the average in each case, in Wales, for (a) the size by area of communities served by jobcentres and (b) the size by population of communities served by jobcentres.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Job seekers are entitled to register at any jobcentre, and jobcentres seek to provide a national service. Given that and the wide diversity in the size, range of services provided and relationship between individual jobcentres, figures for average populations or areas served by jobcentres could not be meaningfully produced.

For management purposes, however, the MSC divides Wales into four employment division areas as follows:

attributed to transport costs from total expenditure on all other services. These figures do not include expenditure on transport or travelling expenses for health service staff.

The Department does not collect information on passenger journeys but certain statistics on ambulance services are compiled by the York health authority. The following table, based on these statistics, shows the total number of NHS patients carried by the ambulance service in England in 1982–83. Information is not available about other categories of passenger or health service personnel transported by NHS vehicles.
