HC Deb 10 April 1984 vol 58 c149W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants drove more than 9,000 miles on official business in the latest year for which figures are conveniently available; what percentage this was of the total number of civil servants making claims for motor mileage allowance; and how many civil servants were provided with a car for use on official business (a) for their sole use and (b) for use on a part-time basis.

Mr. Lawson

The information is not available in the terms requested. However, it was estimated that in 1982 about 4,500 civil servants drove more than 9,000 miles on official business in their private cars. No record is kept of the total number of civil servants claiming motor mileage allowance, but the 1982 estimate was that about 12,000 civil servants drove 5,000 miles or more in a year.

Information on the number of civil servants who were provided with a car for official business is not readily available and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
