HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 c94W
Mr. Stott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the total number of participants in the young workers scheme since the scheme started, in the Wigan travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alan Clark

The total number of young people for whom applications have been approved under the young workers scheme in the Wigan travel-to-work area is 1,119.

Mr. Stott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are currently participating in the young workers scheme in the Wigan travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alan Clark

An employer can claim grant under this scheme for up to 12 months following approval of his initial application. Information is not readily available on an area basis about the number of claims but there are approvals current in respect of 400 young people employed in the Wigan travel-to-work area.

Mr. Stott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the total number of young people have been kept on by employers at the end of the subsidised period, in the Wigan travel-to-work area.

Mr. Alan Clark

This information is not available. Survey evidence suggests that at least 90 per cent. of all employers who receive support under the young workers scheme intend to continue to employ the young people concerned when support is ended.
