HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 cc132-3W
Mr. O'Neill

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the funds allocated by the University Grants Committee to each Scottish university in each academic year since 1978 (a) in total and (b) per undergraduate student.

Mr. Brooke

Following are the funds allocated by the University Grants Committee to each Scottish university in each academic year since 1978. No conclusions should be drawn from year to year changes in these figures because of:

  1. (i) the progressive withdrawal of the overseas student subsidy and changes in the funding of students from the European Community;
  2. (ii) changes in the method of funding or minor capital works;
  3. (iii) the inclusion of compensation for changes in the level of the home tuition fee;
  4. (iv) the inclusion of some redundancy payments;
  5. (v) the provisional nature of the recurrent grant allocations for 1983–84 and 1984–85. The figures given are the UGC's original provisional allocations. Some funds are still to be distributed.

Figures for non-recurrent Exchequer grants reflect the uneven incidence of provision for capital expenditure. Figures are not yet available for 1983–84 or 1984–85.

students. The calculation proposed would therefore be misleading but undergraduate student numbers are as follows.
