asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what are the numbers of (a) remand prisoners and (b) short-term prisoners in English and Welsh prisons, giving numbers for each prison separately;

(2) of all prisoners in English and Welsh prisons, what percentage have been remand prisoners in 1983 and 1984 to date;

(3) over the last five years, what percentage of prisoners in English and Welsh prisons on remand have (a) been convicted and (b) been released without imprisonment.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cells set aside for remand prisoners in England and Wales contain one, two or three prisoners to a cell, giving separate figures for each category.

Mr. Hurd

The information requested is not collected centrally in this form and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost. However, table 3 of the Report on the Work of the Prison Department 1982 (Cmnd 9057) provides details of the highest numbers of inmates sleeping two or three to a cell for the years 1971–82 in all prison department establishments.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many prisoners are held at Winson Green prison; how many of those prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;

(2) how many prisoners are held at Wormwood Scrubs prison; how many of those prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;

(3) how many prisoners are held at Pentonville prison; how many of these prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;

(4) how many prisoners are held at Hull prison; how many of these prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;

(5) how many prisoners are held at Gartree prison; how many of these prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;

(6) how many prisoners are held at Albany prison; how many of these prisoners are unconvicted; and how many unconvicted prisoners have been provisionally put in category A;
