HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 c13W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will estimate the proportion of mail including postal codes in the address for each year since postal codes were introduced.

Mr. Trippier

Although post codes were introduced first in 1959 in Norwich, it was not until 1974 that they became national, and usage figures became available, as follows:

Per cent.
1975 43.5
1976 42.1
1977 44.2
1978 45.5
1979 45.4
1980 41.2
1981 47.8
1982 50.3
1983 52.4
1984 56.3

There is some doubt about the statistical accuracy of the figures up to 1980, in particular the figure for 1980 is considered an underestimate.
