HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 cc77-8W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the anticipated surplus of milk products in the European Economic Community in 1984; and what plans the European Economic Community has for disposing of this surplus.

Mr. MacGregor

The surplus of milk production in the European Economic Community should be significantly reduced in 1984 as a result of the introduction of the supplementary levy system. The precise effects will depend on the reaction of individual producers to the levy and it is not possible to forecast the extent of surplus milk products in 1984.

The Community will continue to dispose of surplus milk products through a range of measures, including subsidies for the consumption of milk products such as the various butter subsidies and the scheme for subsidising milk and milk products consumed in schools; in addition measures will continue for the provision of milk and milk powder for feeding animals and for the export of milk products with export refunds.
