§ Mr. Dubsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many stops or stops and searches of (a) people and (b) vehicles were carried out in 1983 in each Metropolitan police district; and how many arrests resulted.
§ Mr. HurdI understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the information available for 1983 is as given in the following table. The table shows the number of persons or vehicles recorded as stopped; statistics showing the number of occasions on which a search was conducted are not available. Figures for stops of persons and stops of vehicles are not separately identifiable. For limitations on these figures I refer the hon. Member to the answer given to him on 17 November 1983 at column514–15. However, the starred footnote to the table in that reply should not have been included; the resultant arrests include those not followed by a charge. I apologise for this error.
