asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of income recipients receive investment income; and how such income is distributed amongst (a) the richest 1 per cent., (b) the richest 5 per cent., (c) the richest 10 per cent., and (d) the richest 25 per cent. of income recipients.

Mr. Moore

[pursuant to his reply, 6 April 1984, c. 694]: Based on a projection from the 1981–82 survey of personal incomes, about 35 per cent. of single people or married couples have investment income. Estimates of the distribution of investment income are given in the following table. "Total Income" includes only those forms of income liable to tax, before the deduction of personal allowances and reliefs.
