HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 c46W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is satisfied with the discipline of British troops when using usual ferry services to the Continent.

Mr. John Lee

I am satisfied that the instructions relating to the behaviour of Army personnel on ferry services to the continent, the arrangements for supervision of such parties, and the procedures for dealing with any reported cases of indiscipline are adequate.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will initiate an immediate inquiry into the behaviour of British soldiers on the 6 pm Thursday 29 March, Hull to Rotterdam ferry, the North Sea Ferries Norland.

Mr. Lee

The matter has already been investigated by the Army authorities concerned, which are satisfied that the behaviour of the party was generally good.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are his powers to ensure that the behaviour of British troops using cross-Channel ferries does not interfere with the peaceful travel of civilian travellers.

Mr. Lee

Parties of Army personnel using cross-Channel ferries are supervised by officers and senior noncommissioned officers under an officer-in-charge, whose responsibilities include the maintenance of discipline.
