HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 cc1-2W
48. Mr. Barron

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the latest figure for aid going to Ethiopia; and what proportion is going into the northern region for famine relief.

Mr. Raison

We have not recently given development aid to Ethiopia. Humanitarian and food aid provided bilaterally over the last 12 months has been worth £3.7 million. Our share of 1983 European Community food aid is worth £1.8 million; and we are providing £14.75 million of Ethiopia's European development fund allocation. Ethiopia will benefit from new British contributions totalling £5 million for international refugee and relief assistance in Africa. £750,000 of Community emergency food aid and £400,000 of our relief aid contributions were responses to the situation in the north.
