§ Mr. Geoffrey Robinsonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received from the El Salvador Committee for Human Rights in response to his Department's background brief, "Developments in El Salvador"; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WhitneyMy right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State has agreed to receive a delegation from the committee at the request of its joint co-ordinator, Mr. Gatehouse. To date, one other member of the committee has written to raise an individual point about the background brief. Three hon. Members have also written to Foreign and Commonwealth Office Ministers enclosing a copy of a paper by the El Salvador Committee for Human Rights, detailing criticisms of the background brief "Developments in El Salvador". There is always room for different interpretations of available information, but I think that the brief provided a fair picture of the situation at the time.
§ Mr. Steelasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the observations made by British observers to the election in El Salvador.
§ Mr. WhitneyThe observers are now preparing their report, which will be laid before the House. It would be wrong to anticipate their observations.
