HC Deb 09 April 1984 vol 58 cc40-1W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the estimated average cost to the National Health Service in Scotland for donating one pint of blood to private medicine.

Mr. John MacKay

I refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my right hon. Friend on 7 November 1983 to my hon. Friend the Member for Cunninghame, North (Mr. Corrie) [Vol. 48, c.6] announcing that private hospitals should bear their share of the handling and processing costs of blood collected and supplied to them by the National Health Service. The handling charge for whole blood is at present £19 per unit.

Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many pints of blood donated to the National Health Service in Scotland have been provided for use in private medicine since May 1979.

Mr. John MacKay

This information is not available in the form requested. For information about the supply of blood to private hospitals in Scotland I refer the hon. Member to my reply of 11 November 1983 to the hon. Member for Holborn and St. Pancras (Mr. Dobson). [Vol. 48, c.266].
