HC Deb 06 April 1984 vol 57 cc681-2W
Mr. Favell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many caveats against the issue of passports to minors were lodged with the Passport Office in each of the last five years.

Mr. Waddington

On 2 April 1984 there were 1,941 such caveats lodged with the passport department. The Department has not kept statistics of the caveats lodged and removed over the past five years. The information requested could therefore only be provided at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Favell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many passport applications for minors were refused by the Passport Office as a result of caveats in each of the last five years.

Mr. Waddington

An applicant for passport facilities in respect of a minor who is the subject of a caveat, is advised of the conditions on which the facilities may be granted. In most cases the required permission, in the form of either a court order or the consent of the person who lodged the caveat, is forthcoming and outright refusals of passport facilities are rare. The passport department has not maintained statistics of such cases or of the number of applications received in respect of minors who are the subjects of caveats. The information requested could therefore only be provided at disproportionate cost.
