HC Deb 05 April 1984 vol 57 c606W
Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to the answer of 15 March, Official Report, column 229, if he will list the sectors of employment in which the 40 Russian nationals who were granted work permits in 1983 are employed.

Mr. Waddington

The information requested for 1983 is not readily available. In 1982 the majority of work permits granted to Russian nationals were for short term employment in the entertainment sector.

Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what investigatory procedure is adopted prior to the issue of work permits to Russian nationals.

Mr. Waddington

Checks are made on whether the normal conditions of the work permit scheme are satisfied. The main conditions are that the employment is of a prescribed level of skill and no suitable resident labour is available. Checks are also made on whether an individual is personally acceptable.
