Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the recent visit of the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to Liverpool.

Mr. Heseltine

My noble Friend paid a most successful visit to the Merseyside area on 3 April. He met members of regular units, the Territorial Army and the Officers Training Corps and was able to discuss in particular matters relating to the recently-announced expansion of the Territorial Army. My noble Friend was greatly impressed by the calibre and enthusiasm of those he met.

The units he visited were as follows:

  • HQ 42 Infantry Brigade, Chester.
  • 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers, Chester.
  • 2nd Battalion The Light Infantry, Altcar Ranges.
  • 238 Squadron Royal Corps of Transport (Volunteers), Bootle.
  • University Officers Training Corps, Liverpool.
  • University Air Squadron, Liverpool.
  • North West TAVR Association, Liverpool.
  • 208 (Air Defence) Battery Royal Artillery (Volunteers), Liverpool.
