HL Deb 05 April 1984 vol 450 cc892-3WA
Lord Fanshawe of Richmond

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they are taking with the Hong Kong Government towards the establishment of a second airport there; whether talks have been held with the Government of the Chinese People's Republic about such a project; and whether the British Airports International have held discussions with the Chinese about the construction of a new airport in Guandong province.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

The Hong Kong Government announced in February 1983 that for financial reasons it would not give any further consideration in the near future to building a replacement airport at Chek Lapkok. No talks have been held with the Government of the People's Republic of China on the subject. I understand that British Airports International have held preliminary discussions with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Development Company about its plan for a possible airport in Shenzhen.
