Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the total number of home help hours provided by all local authorities in England for each year between 1976 and 1982, inclusive;

(2) what was the total number of home help hours provided by all local authorities in England (a) per 1,000 population of pensionable age, (b) per 1,000 population aged 75 years and over and (c) per 1,000 population aged 85 years and over on 31 March each year between 1976 and 1982 inclusive.

The information requested is not available centrally. The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy publishes a booklet annually giving personal social services statistics, including numbers of home help hours of service provided. Details are incomplete because not all authorities supply information to CIPFA. The following table, derived from the CIPFA returns, shows the total hours of home help service provided in the years requested. Figures broken down into age bands are not available.
