HC Deb 05 April 1984 vol 57 cc643-4W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total expenditure by all local authorities in England on services for elderly people in each financial year from 1976–77 to 1981–82, inclusive (a) per 1,000 population of pensionable age, (b) per 1,000 population aged 75 years and over and (c) per 1,000 population aged 85 years and over.

Mr. John Patten

Information supplied by local authorities does not link all expenditure to a particular client group. The information in the table is restricted to current expenditure on residential accommodation and day centres for the elderly, home helps, meals on wheels, laundry, and salaries for wardens of sheltered acommodation. These sevices are principally for the elderly, but other services (for example social work) also serve the elderly as well as other clients. The figures show total expenditure relating to those aged 65 and over, expressed per 1,000 population in that age group; separate information is not available on expenditure relating to the older age groups.
