HC Deb 05 April 1984 vol 57 c613W
Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much Government establishments are paying for (a) cats and (b) dogs to be used in research.

Mr. Brooke

The Department's responsibilities for the support of scientific research are mainly discharged by the universities and by the five research councils, which receive grants-in-aid from the science budget. The Medical Research Council estimates that in 1982–83 the cost of purchasing and maintaining cats and dogs used in research at the council's own establishments was £36,000 and £3,825 respectively. Other research councils did not use cats and dogs in their establishments. No information is available about the cost of animals used in research at higher education institutions.
