HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 cc587-8W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what establishments are currently used for the teaching of musicians in the services; and what is the cost, by establishment.

Mr. Lee

The three principal centres for the teaching of service musicians are: the Royal Marines School of Music, Deal; the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall; and the RAF School of Music, Uxbridge. In addition, Army junior musicians are trained in regimental depots and Army pipers are trained at the Army School of Piping, Edinburgh. Detailed cost figures for musician training are not available because in some establishments they are inseparable from those for military training. However, the running costs of the three main schools amount to some £.4.6 million a year.
