HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 cc589-90W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has of the numbers of cigarettes sold in the United Kingdom in the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available; and what were the comparable sales in the same 12-month period in each of the previous 10 years.

Mr. John Patten

Information on the number of duty-paid cigarettes released for home consumption is available only since 1977. The information for that year and later periods is published in table 6.13 of Monthly Digest of Statistics and table 8.38 of the Annual Abstract of Statistics 1984 edition, copies of which are available in the Library. The March 1984 edition of the Monthly Digest of Statistics, to be published mid-April, will show that 102.5 thousand million cigarettes were released for home consumption in 1983.
