HC Deb 03 April 1984 vol 57 c501W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how long is the currently estimated effective life of main frame computers in his Department.

Mr. Lee

The planned life for main frame computers is 10 years. A number of computers are kept in service for a longer period, but the pace of technological change, often with a resulting reduction in maintenance charges, has in some instances made earlier replacement more economic.
