asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will now introduce proposals for a five-year contract for head teachers.

Sir Keith Joseph

The form of contract under which head teachers serve is a matter for local education authorities and the governors of voluntary schools. It is open to employers to offer posts on a fixed-term basis if they wish to do so.

32. Sir William van Straubenzee

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he proposes to start his consultations on his proposals for a probationary period for new head teachers.

A consultative document will be issued tomorrow and I shall arrange for a copy to be placed in the Library of the House.
