HC Deb 03 April 1984 vol 57 cc451-2W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will set out the effect of a 1,250 million European currency unit rebate from the European Economic Community in terms of the likely amended net contribution that would then result on the existing own-resources basis for each of the next 10 years.

Mr. Ian Stewart

[pursuant to his reply, 2 April 1984, c. 371]: We have proposed that the UK's net contribution should be limited by reference of GDP and relative prosperity. On the basis of the 1983 figures, the Prime Minister has said we could accept a system which gave us relief of 1,250 mecu out of a net contribution to the Community's allocated budget of just over 1,900 mecu. The effects in subsequent years would depend on the parameters of the system, which are still to be negotiated, and on economic development.

of the treaty of accession. These contributions were not split between the various own resources headings. From 1 January 1979 the UK has paid VAT rather than a GNP based contribution. The following table sets out the figures for Customs duties, agricultural levies and sugar and isoglucose levies as well as GNP based-VAT payments which make up the UK's total gross contributions to the EEC budget.
