Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether those who will operate the privatised renal dialysis units in Bangor and Carmarthen will be expected to provide the capital and staff and to pay running costs; if the bill then sent to the health authorities will be based on a fee per dialysis; and what is the expected fee per dialysis.

No decision on who will run the pilot subsidiary renal units has been made.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what control he will exercise over the proposed renal dialysis units in Carmarthen and Bangor regarding inspecting them, the qualifications of the staff working in the units and the standards of operation and nursing in the units; what will be the role and standing of area health authorities concerning the units; if he will ensure consultations between the units and the area health authorities and the community health councils in Wales; and if he proposes a system of annual licensing for these units.

The patients dialysed in the units will remain under the clinic responsibility of the nearest main National Health Service renal unit.
