HC Deb 02 April 1984 vol 57 c401W
Mr. Beggs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many (a) Loyalist, (b) Republican and (c) other prisoners are held in Northern Ireland prisons; how many jobs are available to prisoners; and how these are distributed among the various groups.

Mr. Scott

It is not possible to classify all prisoners in the manner requested. On 11 March 1984 the total population of the Northern Ireland prison establishments was 2,345, of whom 386 untried and 193 special category prisoners are not required to work. Approximately 1,600 jobs have been identified throughout the various establishments.
