HL Deb 02 April 1984 vol 450 c584WA
Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give further information as to the nature and timing of the action planned to deter advertisers on pirate radio stations to which The Lord Cockfield referred in his reply to Lord Mulley's parliamentary Question for Written Answer on 22nd March.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Lord Cockfield)

In the case of land based pirate radio stations letters are to be sent to advertisers warning them that they may be liable to prosecution for aiding and abetting offences under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949. Advertisers on off-shore pirate stations are committing an offence under the Marine, Etc., Broadcasting Offences Act 1967. Evidence will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions with whom the decision rests to prosecute offenders. Action on these lines is in hand and will be implemented as soon as practicable.
