HC Deb 02 April 1984 vol 57 cc428-9W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish in the Official Report the percentage expenditure of repairs and renovations, as against new capital projects, in respect of (a) roads, (b) bridges and (c) sewerage by local authorities in each of the last four years.

Mr. Waldegrave

The percentage split of total expenditure on roads (including road bridges) by local authorities in England between repairs and maintenance and capital projects is as follows:

1980–81 1981–82 1982–83 1983–84*
Road maintenance 62 68 65 67
Capital projects 38 32 35 33
100 100 100 100
* Percentage estimate.

Separate information on expenditure on road bridges is not held centrally.

In England responsibility for sewerage services rests with the water authorities and where a local authority acts as an agent for a water authority the expenditure incurred is reimbursed fully by the water authority. Some expenditure on sewerage may be incurred by local authorities on their own estates but separate information on this expenditure is not held centrally.
