HL Deb 02 April 1984 vol 450 c582WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

At which prisons in England and Wales Halal meat is available, and how many Moslem prisoners are accommodated in the other prisons where Halal meat is not available.

Lord Elton

Under instructions issued last year establishments may provide Halal meat purchased under local contract from within the establishment's meat cash allowance as an alternative to the vegetarian diet which is generally available to Moslems. It is for individual establishments to determine the most appropriate catering arrangements for Moslem inmates in the light of local resources and the need to accommodate the dietary requirements of the Moslem faith. No detailed information exists on the extent to which Halal meat is currently available.
