§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will state (a) how many dairy farmers there were, (b) how many milking cows there were and (c) how many litres of milk were produced in Wales in 1980 and 1983, respectively.
§ Mr. Nicholas EdwardsThe number of registrations held by milk producers in Wales in June 1980 and June 1983 totalled 7,959 and 7,443 respectively. The number of farmers associated with these totals are not known. However, at June 1980 and June 1983, 7,705 holdings and 7,138 holdings respectively were classified in the agricultural census as "specialist dairy" or "mainly dairy" farms. The numbers of farmers, including partners and directors doing farm work, on these farm types totalled 9,705 and 9,030 respectively.
The number of dairy cows in Wales in June 1980 and June 1983 totalled 352,300 and 377,000 respectively. Sales of milk off farms totalled 1,569.6 million litres in 1980. The provisional figure for 1983 is 1,771.9 million litres.
