Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many burglaries were committed in Liverpool in 1983; and what were the comparable figures for 1978;

(2) how many offences were recorded in Liverpool in 1983; and how these figures compare with 1978;

(3) how many offences were recorded on Merseyside in 1983; and how these figures compare with 1978;

(4) how many burglaries were committed on Merseyside in 1983; and what were the comparable figures for 1978.

The information available centrally is for police force areas and is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales" (table 2.5 of the volume for 1982, Cmnd. 9048). Information for 1983 was published in table 6 of Home Office statistical bulletin 5/84 on 15 March.

(2) how many armed robberies were committed in Merseyside in 1983; and what were the comparable figures for 1978.

Mr. Mellor

The information available centrally is for police force areas. In 1978 in the Merseyside police force area 26 offences of robbery were recorded by the police in which firearms were reported to have been used; in 1982 the corresponding figure was 47. Corresponding information for 1983 is not yet available.
