asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many tonnes of coal were consumed in 1978, 1982 and 1983, respectively, per £1,000 of gross domestic product.

At current market prices, total United Kingdom coal consumption per £1,000 of gross domestic product was 0.7 tonnes in 1978 and 0.4 tonnes in 1982 and 1983. At constant 1980 prices, total United Kingdom coal consumption was 0.5 tonnes per £1,000 of gross domestic product in all three years.
