HC Deb 02 April 1984 vol 57 c431W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what procedures are used to ensure that technical details necessary for the manufacture of chemical warfare agents do not fall into the hands of unauthorised persons.

Mr. Lee

The chemical composition and processes appropriate to the synthesis of many potential chemical warfare agents are widely known; some potential agents are closely related to compounds in wide use for other purposes. The United Kingdom abandoned chemical weapons in the late 1950s, and, therefore, undertakes no research into their manufacture. Any information potentially relevant to the manufacture of chemical warfare agents would be subject to normal security measures appropriate to its classification.
