HC Deb 02 April 1984 vol 57 cc372-3W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many people take part in adult education courses; and what information is available about the sex and the social and ethnic make-up of people on such courses.

Mr. Brooke

In the academic year 1982–83, there were 2,770,000 enrolments of whom 900,000 were men and 1,870,000 women on courses of adult education in England provided by adult education centres, community centres, youth clubs, residential colleges maintained or assisted by local education authorities, university extramural departments and the Workers Educational Association. Information about the social and ethnic make-up of these people is not collected by the Department.
