HC Deb 27 October 1983 vol 47 c154W
Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the estimated number of people employed in the production, distribution and sale of tobacco and tobacco products.

Mr. Alan Clark

The Department's statistics are analysed according to minimum list headings of the 1968 standard industrial classification. In June 1983, the provisional number of employees in employment in the manufacture of tobacco and tobacco products—MLH 240—in Great Britain was 24,100.

The classification does not separately distinguish the distribution and selling side of the business.
