HC Deb 27 October 1983 vol 47 c172W
Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the rate of the daily and half-daily fee paid respectively for mental health review tribunal service to the legally qualified chairman, the medical member and the lay member at the latest convenient date; and what were these amounts on the same date in 1979 and 1974.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The information is as follows (daily rates):

Legal* Medical Lay
£ £ £
1 October 1974 25 26.71 10.50
1 October 1979 44 54.80 17.50
1 October 1983 98 99 40
* Acting as president.

Half-day fees are pro rata to the daily rates. Medical members are paid at the same rate for time spent examining the patient before the hearing.

Circuit judges when presiding over a mental health review tribunal do not receive a fee; silk recorders are paid at the rate of £132 per day or part thereof. Comparable rates for 1974 and 1979 are not applicable as these appointments have been made since the passage of the Mental Health (Amendment) Act 1982.
