HC Deb 24 October 1983 vol 47 c42W
Mr. Hume

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will estimate the current level of youth unemployment for (a) 16 to 19-year-olds and (b) 20 to 25-year-olds on a travel-to-work area basis in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Butler

It is not possible to produce unemployment rates for the 16–19 and 20–24-year-old age groups because a breakdown of employees by age group is not available.

The number of unemployed claimants at 14 July 1983 aged 16–19 and 20–24-years-old by travel-to-work area in Northern Ireland is as follows:

Travel to work area 16–19-year-olds 20–24-year-olds
Armagh 496 659
Ballymena 1,719 2,174
Belfast 9,476 12,503
Coleraine 977 1,287
Cookstown 314 477
Craigavon 1,382 1,811
Downpatrick 681 966
Dungannon 515 849
Enniskillen 637 969
Londonderry 2,068 2,982
Newry 847 1,424
Omagh 472 799
Strabane 590 843

Note: Separate figures for the 20–25-year-old age group are not available.
