HL Deb 29 November 1983 vol 445 c681WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the number of persons detained in prisons following a non-custodial sentence and a recommendation for deportation by the courts in 1981 and 1982 respectively; and in each case what was the average length of time for which those persons were so detained.

Lord Elton

It is estimated that about 150 people were received into prison department establishments in England and Wales in both 1981 and 1982 for detention under the Immigration Act 1971 following a non-custodial sentence and a recommendation for deportation by the courts. In both years the average period of detention of such persons was about eight weeks.
